Wellington Expressway: Mackay's to Peka Peka section

INTRODUCTION

This 18km section of the Wellington Expressway extended from Mackays Crossing (just north of Paekakariki) through the Kapati Coast to Peka Peka Beach Road. We were commissioned by the M2PP Alliance to prepare the tender and construction programmes and to monitor and report on the construction programme.

  • The project entailed approximately 3 million cubic metres of earthworks through mainly sand country but allowance needed to be made for the underlaying soft peat.
  • The project was beset by many consenting problems (stemming from much opposition to the project) which delayed various sections of the work.
  • The project included several bridges and 3 interchanges.
  • Extensive ground improvements were required under all bridge abutments.
